In 2006, a large area of land in south-eastern Nigeria was quickly lost to gully erosion, as a result of the Nigerian Gully Erosion Crisis which has been ongoing since prior to 1980. The total area lost in 2006 was estimated to be 2 820km2 (282 000ha) – and yes, these figures are correct! These gullies were created by several factors – one of the main ones being urban development undertaken without consideration of hydropedological factors and processes.
Hydropedology studies work to determine how water moves through an area (both above and below ground), how any development and resultant changes in water movement (and often water quantity) will affect the area, and areas downstream. The results of these studies are used to guide construction plans and mitigation measures.
